Recognition Dinner was held for Foster
Grandparents
OKANOGAN, WA., AUG. 26—A Foster Grandparent Recognition Dinner
was held here today at the Cedars Inn. Nespelem District
Councilman Andy Joseph Jr. gave the “Opening Prayer”.
After a Social get together and Story telling that morning,
lunch was prepared and served by the Sun Valley Restaurant.
Joan Goujon, Social Services and Foster Grandparent Manager,
told the audience that the Foster Grandparent Program helps
teach kids about the old ways, that they’re involved in the
Okanogan County Juvenile System to help kids who don’t have
anyone to support or help them, to help kids of all races,
etc.
Blue, red, and green T-shirts were given out. Foster
Grandparents received a Certificate that showed they were
members of the Foster Grandparent Program, and other items
such as: cd case, picnic back pack, lunch tote, travel case
w/mirror, cosmetic case, and a journal.
The day ended as seven people rehearsed a Script entitled: “As
the Red World Turns”. The script is about how life today is so
different compared to the old days. The actors who took part
in the rehearsal were: Rose Adolph, Joan Goujon, Francis
Herman, Yvonne Moses, Kate Sanchez, Norman Steele, and Yvonne
Swan.
Attending the Dinner were the following members of the Tribes
Business Council: Shirley Charley, Mike Marchand and Cheri
Moomaw from the Omak District; Andy Joseph Jr. and Harvey
Moses Jr—Nespelem District; Lee Adolph—Keller District; and
Terry Finley and Virgil Seymour—Inchelium District.
Foster Grandparents at the Dinner were:
LeRoy Charley, Isabelle Cleparty, Rose Condon Adolph, Judy
Potter, Louella R. Friedlander, Kenneth Goujon, Pete Hall Jr.,
Francis Herman, Alice Irey, Bertha Matt, Ellen Moses, Yvonne
Moses, Loretta Pakootas, Theresa Sam, Joann Signor, Norman
Steele, Yvonne Swan, Pearl Trevino.
Foster Grandparents who were unable to attend the dinner:
Stella Baker, Genevine Edwards, Mergelena Jackson, Grace
Moore, Martina Nicholson, Margaret Pierre, Jeannette Timentwa.

IS SERVED—Nespelem District Councilman Harvey Moses Jr. and
his mother Ellen Moses go through the chow line during the
Foster Grandparent Recognition Dinner held Aug. 26 at the
Cedars Inn, Okanogan, WA. Harvey is the Chairperson of the
Business Council.

OUTSTANDING
STUDENT & ATHLETE—A “Going Away Dinner” was held for Victor
“Vic” Camarena at the Nez Perce Longhouse on Thursday, Aug. 2.
Vic is going to attend Pensacola Christian College at
Pensacola, Florida. Next to him is his mother Dorothy
Redthunder Camarena. Vic graduated from Lake Roosevelt High
School, Coulee Dam, WA. He was the Student Body President for
the Academic Year 2004-2005...won the Citizenship Award 2005
for LRHS...and in sports he participated in cross country,
wrestling, and track.

ENTRY-Members of the Color Guard for the Grand Entry for the
Pow Wow held on Thursday, Sept. 22, at the Lake Roosevelt
Football Field, Coulee Dam, WA., were: (L to R) Toria Jackson,
Owen Goggles, and Ray Wells. The Pow Wow was part of the
different activities for the “Cultural Awareness Gathering”
held at the football field in commemoration of Native American
Day, Friday, Sept. 23.

I IN STEP?—People in the bleachers look on as as young and old
perform the Owl Dance on the Lake Roosevelt Football Field
during the “Cultural Awareness Gathering” held on Sept. 22.
Different stations were set up on the football field, and one
could see a fish and wildlife display...learn how to set up a
teepee...how to play stick game...look at dancing
regalia...etc.

AHEAD OF THE 2ND PLACE WINNER BY 71-SECONDS—During the “Eagle
Invite Cross Country” meet held on the grounds of the Nespelem
School, Johnny Drywater took 1st place with a time of
9-minutes and 27-seconds. Johnny is in the 8th Grade, and 2nd
through 5th place was taken by runners in the 7th Grade:
Lindsey Vargas, Charlie Bond, Paul Myrick, and Jacob
Cleveland. Winning the girls event was Miranda Salas, who is
in the 6th grade. The meet was held on Thursday, Sept. 22.

GOT IT—Members of the Nespelem School Girls’ Volleyball team
are: (L to R) Rhandi Morin, Breanna Salas, Natasha Vargas,
Shirley Palmer, and Briana Monaghan. The team beat Republic,
and after that they beat Curlew. The two games were held on
Thursday, Sept. 22, at the Nespelem School Gym.
