Everybody did what they could to make the 29th Annual Nespelem Junior Rodeo a success!

NESPELEM, APRIL 21-23—Everybody either came to watch or to compete in the 29th Annual Nespelem Junior Rodeo held here this weekend.

The Nespelem Junior Rodeo Association’s first rodeo was held in 1978, and they’re still going strong. A section in the Rodeo Program thanked the individuals and businesses that sponsored awards through ads and donations. Thanks was also given to the many volunteers that took care of the rodeo grounds, and to the rodeo volunteers who helped keep things moving during the different events.

The Rodeo Program contained ads from the cities of: Omak, Okanogan, Grand Coulee, Hot Springs-Mt., Coulee Dam, Electric City, Moses Lake, Nespelem, and Elmer City.

On Sunday morning, Apr. 23, during the Grand Entry a moment of silence was held to pay respect and honor the memory of “Stoney” Anthony Covington. “Stoney’s” Uncle, Blaine (Bozo) Covington rode his horse, and led a horse with no rider.

THEY PAID THEIR RESPECT TO “STONEY”—The two middle pages of the Program for the 29th Annual Nespelem Junior Rodeo April 21-23 paid tribute to “Stoney” Anthony Covington. Stoney was born on July 27, 1988, and because of a bull riding accident he left us on June 25, 2005. The above picture of “Stoney” was taken last year on Sunday, April 24, when he competed in the Nespelem Junior Rodeo. (Photo/Cutline by Sam Sampson)

THREE NESPELEM SCHOOL STUDENTS VISIT WASHINGTON, D.C.—One of the high lights that three Nespelem School students had while attending the annual Impact Aid conference held in late March at Washington, D.C., was that they got to meet the two U.S. Senators from Washington State, Maria Cantwell and Patty Murray. Having their picture taken with Senator Patty Murray were: (Front Row/L to R) Pendleton Moses, Sen. Murray, Tribal Elder Yvonne Moses...(Back row/L to R) and Casey Nicholson and Almandaree Fox. Casey and Almandaree are in the 7th Grade, and Pendleton is a 6th Grade student. Casey and Pendleton wrote about what happened at Washington, D.C. Casey said that her favorite sight was the Lincoln Memorial and she admired President Lincoln because of what he did to free the slaves. And Pendleton told about the many famous places he got to see and visit: the Arlington National Cemetery where he seen the Eternal Flame and the site where President John F. Kennedy and his family are buried, and the changing of the guard at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier, etc. Pendleton also spoke about how they toured the Capital, and that they met the two U.S. Senators from Washington State and had their pictures taken with them! Casey and Pendleton’s papers on their trip to Washington, D.C. appears on page 9 of the Tribal Tribune. (Photo from Nespelem School/Cutline by Sam Sampson)
