Northwest Indian Veteran Association
NIVA recently visited Spokane and met with a group of Veterans
at the Homeless Veteran Center in Spokane to discuss opening a
Chapter in Spokane.
NIVA developed a resource directory in the Portland area for
Native American Veterans and would like to do the same in
Spokane.
Resources include but are not limited to social services,
housing, employment, health and VA benefits to name a few. The
Spokane NIVA chapter would be responsible for developing this
directory. In addition, a Spokane chapter would create their
own color/honor guard for special details and funeral
services.
If you are interested in starting a NIVA chapter in Spokane
and the surrounding area, or have any questions please call

Paschal Sherman Indian
School
Paschal Sherman Indian School was pleased to
host a Washington Assessment of Student Learning (WASL)
activity evening on March 16th. About 120 students, parents,
and staff attended the free meal, parent meeting, and student
activities. During the parent meeting, the principal, Mrs.
Roberts, and Mr. Witt presented material that will help
parents better prepare for this important test needed to
graduate from high school.
During the meeting, the students participated in activities
that centered around a flying high theme. Maggie Pakootas in
Kindergarten, Alice Campbell in 2nd Grade, and Kellie Manduza
of 7th Grade won the coloring contest. At the end of the
evening, each student received a kite. Thanks to all of the
staff who helped support this evening. Kenneth Harry and
Colton Seely of Kindergarten are pictured flying their paper
airplanes.
Paschal Sherman Indian School would like to invite our
friends and family to Our Annual Sunflower Festival. It will
be held on Friday, May 26th.
Festivities include:
• Mass and First Communion for the 2nd Graders.
• The sun run
• 3 on 3 basketball tournament
• Stick game tournament
• Native Youth Art Show
• Historical Photo Display
• Concessions
• Raffles
• Health Display
• Fishing Derby
• Vendor booths
• Grand Entry/Inter-tribal Powwow
• Crowning of the 2006-2007 Sunflower Royalty
• FREE meal with traditional tribal foods
• School Board Elections-3 positions open
This event is a huge effort for the school and any community
volunteers are welcome. Please contact Ms. Simpson to
volunteer at 422-7581.
All area vendors are welcome to attend.
Please be aware there will is a $10 fee for each vendor or the
vendor may choose to donate an item from their table to the
school raffle.
Native Youth Art Show
The Native Youth Art Show is a reservation wide event, and is
open to all native youth 4 years old to twenty years old. The
art show is an annual event, since 1989. Entries for the art
show are due May 19th. The art show is open during Sunflower
Festival, May26th; in the Gifted/Talented Program
classrooms. Ribbons and certificates are awarded for all art
divisions and age categories. Contact Susan Best for entry
information, 422-7743.
The School board application deadline is May 10, 2006.
Any applicants must be a endorsed by five persons who are
enrolled tribal members of the Colville Tribes. They must also
be 18 years old before May 26, 2006. Potential Board Members
will be either a parent or a person with some experience or
interest in Indian Education. Interested persons must pick up
a petition for application at Paschal Sherman Indian School
8:30 a.m.-4:30 p.m. Monday-Friday. Originals must be returned
in person-no fax copies will be accepted. For questions, call
422-7582.

Northwest Indian College
Northwest Indian College is beginning its third
full quarter of classes at the Colville Site. NWIC offers a
wide range of Degree and Certificate Programs. For spring
quarter, students can select from a total of 29 classes
offered locally.
Most of these classes contribute toward earning an Associates
of Arts and Sciences Degree or an Associate of Science Degree.
Both of these degrees can be used to transfer to a 4-year
program.
Other programs include a General Direct Transfer Degree (AAS),
Early Childhood Education (AAS-T), Native American Studies (AAS),
Oksale Native Education (AAS), Chemical Dependency Studies
(ATA), as well as a number of certificate programs. There are
also opportunities for personal and professional development
through NWIC.
During Winter Quarter, a total of 69 students enrolled for
classes. Classes for Spring Quarter begin on April 3rd, 2006.
Late registration will continue through April 7th.
Northwest Indian College also offers the opportunity to obtain
college level credits through Independent Learning. NWIC
offices at the Colvill Site are located in the HRD Building on
the Colville Agency Campus.
