Float Planes being used to deliver drugs on the Colville Indian Reservation

NESPELEM, WA., MAR. 23—North Central Washington Narcotics Task Force Officers watched as a float plane landed at Soap Lake...which is about 3 miles southeast of Malott, WA., on the Colville Indian Reservation...and unloaded 324.8 pounds of packaged marijuana “Bud” onto a boat and then took off. The operation only took about seven (7)-minutes. The officers arrested two men who were aboard the boat, Ksharmila Kumar, 37, and Shailen Varna, 25, both from Vancouver, B.C., and impounded their rented SUV and the street value of the marijuana is estimated to be $1.5-million.
Today’s arrest makes the third time since last month that people have been arrested on the Reservation on drug charges. The other two arrests occurred when:
*A float plane landed on Nicholson Beach on the Northwest end of Omak Lake, where a pickup truck met it on Sunday, Feb. 19. Michael Aaron Brady, 26, was later arrested near Moomaw Road driving a new 2006 Chevrolet Silverado pickup that contained two large duffle bags filled with 75 plastic baggies of marijuana estimated to be worth between $255,000 and $425,000.
*The float plane in the above picture was first seen at McGinnis Lake about 12:30 p.m., Tuesday, Mar. 14. It’s believed that the drugs that the plane carried was originally scheduled to be dropped off at McGinnis Lake, but for whatever reason a drop wasn’t made. Instead the pilot went to Lake Rufus Woods and was hiding his load in the sagebrush when police officers spotted him. Police disabled the plane when one of them threw a rock into the propeller and another officer fired his gun into the plane’s motor.
For the past two years funding for the North Central Washington Narcotics Task Force, Okanogan, WA., has been cut. If this Task Force has to close down it will put that much added work on the Local, State, Federal, and Tribal Police to stop drug activity from taking place on the Colville Indian Reservation. One way to help the authorities is to call the police when you see something suspicious!!!

REPORT UNMARKED FLOAT PLANES—This unmarked 1980 single-engine Cessna 185 was on Lake Rufus Woods when it was seized by police authorities about 11-miles North of the Colville Indian Agency (CIA), Nespelem, WA., along the Columbia River/Omak Lake Road on Tuesday, Mar. 14. The pilot, Kevin Haughton, 41, Courtenay, B.C., escaped but was captured the next day at the Trading Post located on the CIA grounds, and was charged with possession with intent to distribute more than 100 kilograms of marijuana, which weighed about 220 pounds, and is worth about $2-million. The plane is presently located behind the Colville Tribal Police Headquarters. One of the things that may happen to the plane is that the U.S. Marshals, Spokane, WA., will auction the plane off and the Tribe will receive benefits.

Colville Indian Housing Authority gives $600,000 to Community Centers

NESPELEM, WA., MAR. 27—In its continued commitment to provide assistance to Tribal Members, the Community, and the Tribe, the Colville Indian Housing Authority presented funding to all Tribal Community Centers. In discussing the need of each Community, the Colville Indian Housing Authority Board of Commissioners realized that the use of the Community Centers is vital to each Community. Our belief is that the Community Centers are the Hub of activity for each District.
Each District’s Community Center received a check today in the amount of $150,000. The funds are for the repair and modernization of those facilities. This funding will allow necessary repairs and improvements to enhance the use by the Community and its youth, and will not be used for administrative cost or programs. The CIHA Board believes this will help the Community Centers continue as a Hub for the Tribal Members.

SAY CHEESE!!—The four members of the Colville Indian Housing Authority (CIHA) Board of Directors presented a $150,000 check to each of the Directors for the Community Centers located in the Reservation’s four Districts...and participating in the ceremony were five members of the Tribes Business Council.
